A brief history
Richard Óg de Burgh, the 2nd Earl of Ulster, built the first castle at Dunluce in the 13th centuary.
It was first recorded in the hands of the McQuillan family in 1513 and they occupied it for nearly three centuries until they were were overthrown by the MacDonnell family after several lost battles in the mid and late 16th century
Dunluce Castle served as the seat of the Earl of Antrim until in 1690 but since then it has deteriorated to the beautiful ruins seen below.
One stormy night…
According to legend, on a particularly stormy night in 1639, part of the kitchen next to the cliff face collapsed into the icy waters below.
Legend tells that when the kitchen dropped into the sea, only a kitchen boy survived, as he was sat in the corner of the kitchen which remained intact.
